Vitamin D is important for your mental health

Many studies have shown the importance of vitamin D in preventing various diseases like bone illness, diabetes mellitus, multiple sclerosis, and several types of internal cancers. Everyone should be aware of the fact that Vitamin D sufficiency has to be maintained during all stages of life, from fetal development to old age.

Current studies reveal that vitamin D sufficiency is important also for mental health. Indeed, it has shown a significant impact on reducing the level of depression, such as during pregnancy, the probability of psychosis, or anxiety disorders, and it helps to improve mental health in older people.

Vitamin D is made in the skin under the influence of sunlight. This, as it contributes to serum vitamin D adequate levels, depends on the time of day, season, latitude, part of the body exposed, skin pigmentation, body mass index, and amount of body fat. Foods and vitamin D supplementation are other important sources of vitamin D.

Although the optimal range of vitamin D is still the subject of debate, it is assumed to be approximately 30-50 ng/mL (75-125 nmol/L). Research has shown low vitamin D is a significant predictor of depression symptoms in both men and women.
